  32. WHAT IS WINPRINT?
  33.  
  34.      WinPrint is a Windows shareware application that allows
  35.      you to easily print ASCII text files from within
  36.      Windows.  It allows you to specify headers and footers
  37.      with page numbers, fonts, margins, landscape v.
  38.      portrait mode, and "multiple pages up" printing.  See
  39.      the WINPRINT.HLP file for a more complete description.
  40.      
  41.      WinPrint was designed from the very beginning to be a
  42.      tool for printing plain text files.  Version 1.3 and
  43.      Version 1.4 do not support the printing of graphics,
  44.      word processing documents, or spreadsheets.  The goal
  45.      from has been to keep WinPrint as small, efficient, and
  46.      simple as possible.
  47.      
  48.      If you want to print graphics use PaintBrush it works
  49.      just fine.  If you want to print your word processing
  50.      documents, use your word processor, and if you want to
  51.      print spreadsheets use your spreadsheet package; they
  52.      all print nicely.  But if you want to print plain ASCII
  53.      text files use WinPrint!
  54.  
  55.      The WINPRINT.HLP file contains all the documentation
  56.      you will need.  It also contains information on how to
  57.      register WinPrint.
  58.      
  59. GETTING STARTED
  60.      
  61.      A few quick notes on what is needed to run WinPrint:
  62.      
  63.      Under Windows 3.0 and 3.0a you need the following
  64.      Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) in your path:
  65.           
  66.           TDUTIL.DLL     - WinPrint Support DLL
  67.           COMMDLG.DLL    - Microsoft Common Dialogs DLL.
  68.                     You only need    this file if you are
  69.                     running on Windows 3.0.
  70.      
  71.      You will also need the main WINPRINT.EXE executable
  72.      file and the help file (WINPRINT.HLP).
  73.      
  74.      I recommend that you create a "WINAPPS" directory off
  75.      of your root directory in which you place all of your
  76.      "small" Windows applications such as WinPrint.  Copy
  77.      the above files into this directory and make sure that
  78.      the directory is in your path statement.
  79.      
  80.      You can now run WinPrint just as you would any Windows
  81.      application.  See the section in the WINPRINT.HLP file
  82.      titled STARTING WINPRINT for more details.
  83.      
  84. NOTES TO USERS OF PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF WINPRINT 1.x
  85.  
  86.      WinPrint 1.32 was designed Windows 2.x application.  It
  87.      worked correctly under Windows 3.0 because it adhered
  88.      to Microsoft's programming guidelines for Windows.
  89.      
  90.      WinPrint 1.4 has been designed as a Windows 3.x
  91.      application.  It takes advantage of features found only
  92.      in Windows 3.0 and above.  As such, it will not run on
  93.      Windows 2.x, and will not operate correctly with
  94.      printer drivers that have not been updated to the
  95.      Windows 3.0 specification.
  96.      
  97.      Versions of Windows previous to Windows 3.0 provided no
  98.      way for applications to store printer settings
  99.      "locally."  For example any change made to printer
  100.      settings from within an application (such as landscape
  101.      mode) were made system wide.  The Windows 3.0 printer
  102.      driver specification allows for applications to change
  103.      printer settings locally.  WinPrint 1.4 takes advantage
  104.      of this, and adheres to the policy that no application
  105.      except Control Panel can make system wide printer
  106.      setting changes.
  107.      
  108.      One of the biggest bugs in WinPrint 1.32 was that it
  109.      incorrectly selected fonts.  For example you would tell
  110.      it to print using a 10 point font, but it would
  111.      actually use a font much smaller.  This has been
  112.      corrected in WinPrint 1.4.
  113.      
  114.      Because of the changes to WinPrint 1.4 are fundamental
  115.      in nature, saved configurations from earlier versions
  116.      will not be converted.  It might have been possible to
  117.      do a partial conversion of your settings to the new
  118.      format, but there are so many new features and bug
  119.      fixes in 1.4 that the conversion would have been
  120.      inaccurate at best.  The decision was made that it
  121.      would be easier for the user to re-create your settings
  122.      than to try to figure out what was converted correctly
  123.      and what was not.
  124.      
  125.      WinPrint 1.32 saved all configuration information in
  126.      the WIN.INI file.  WinPrint 1.4 saves all of it's
  127.      configuration information in the WINPRINT.INI file.
  128.      The format of the information has changed, but when
  129.      WinPrint 1.4 is run on a machine for the first time, it
  130.      copies your registration information to the
  131.      WINPRINT.INI file.  Once you run WinPrint 1.4 for the
  132.      first time you can delete all WinPrint related sections
  133.      from your WIN.INI file if you wish.
  134.      
  135.      The format of WinPrint registration numbers changed
  136.      between versions 1.3 and 1.4.  WinPrint 1.4 and up will
  137.      correctly decode your 1.32 registration number and
  138.      convert it to the new format.  This has been done for
  139.      several reasons:
  140.      
  141.      1) The old WinPrint registration number was up to 12
  142.      characters long and was too difficult to enter.
  143.      
  144.      2) The new number format allows me to more easily track
  145.      what version of WinPrint a user is using.
  146.      
  147.      Version 1.5 of WinPrint was designed to specifically
  148.      support Windows 3.1 and to address many small bugs.  It
  149.      has not been extensively tested on Windows 3.0.  If you
  150.      are still using Windows 3.0, it is recommeded that you
  151.      DO NOT upgrade to WinPrint 1.5 until you also upgrade
  152.      to Windows 3.1.
  153.  
  154. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  155.      Version 1.5 of WinPrint has been extensively tested.
  156.      However there are a few problems that are known and are
  157.      not worth the time it would take to fix at this point:
  158.      
  159.      UNC FILENAMES ARE NOT SUPPORTED
  160.           WinPrint 1.5 does not correctly support "UNC"
  161.      style filenames.  UNC filenames are of the form
  162.      "\\SERVER\SHARE\DIRECTORY\FILENAME.EXT".  Future
  163.      versions of WinPrint will support these file
  164.      specifications correctly.
  165.      
  166.      SOME WINDOWS 3.0 PRINTER DRIVERS ARE BUGGY
  167.           Many of the Dot Matrix printer drivers shipped
  168.      with Windows 3.0 are buggy, and most do not in fact
  169.      conform the the Windows 3.0 printer driver
  170.      specification.  Because of this you will not be able to
  171.      change printer settings from WinPrint with these
  172.      drivers.  See the WINPRINT.HLP file for more
  173.      information on this.  It is highly recommended that you
  174.      upgrade to Windows 3.1.
  175.      
  176.      POSTSCRIPT EMULATORS REPORT INCORRECT PAGE SIZE
  177.           Several PostScript addon products and emulators
  178.      incorrectly report page size to Windows.  The result is
  179.      that when WinPrint is set up so all margins are set to
  180.      0.00", some text is printed "off page."  If you
  181.      encounter this problem simply increase all four margins
  182.      until the problem goes away (usually 0.10" works).
  183.      This problem has been noted on the HP LaserJet IIIsi in
  184.      PostScript mode and the PacificPage Postscript
  185.      cartridge for the HP LaserJet II.
  186.      
  187.      DOT MATRIX DRIVERS SELECT FONTS INCORRECTLY
  188.           Some Windows 3.0 dot matrix printer drivers allow
  189.      you to set the resoultion that they print graphics at.
  190.      When these drivers are set at their lowest resolution
  191.      settings they print some fonts too big.  The easy work
  192.      around is to set the driver up to use higher resolution
  193.      or print only with device based fonts (see
  194.      WINPRINT.HLP for more details).
  195.      
  196. VERSION HISTORY
  197.      Version 1.51 September 26, 1993
  198.      Command line expansion of fully qualified wildcards on
  199.      the command line was not working in previous versions.
  200.      For example, WinPrint would expand C:\FOO\BAR\*.* to
  201.      C:\FOO\*.*.  This has been fixed.

  204.      Minor bug fixes over 1.50.001.  Fixed help file and
  205.      added support for "GO SWREG" on compuserve!

  207.      Version 1.50.001 May 20, 1992
  208.      Fixed bugs regarding printing with tab expansion on.
  209.      Fixed some problems with headers/footers and page
  210.      numbers.  Changed file select listbox back to a single
  211.      column due to popular demand.  New 3D dialog effects

  213.      Microsoft C7.00 (reduced executable size by over
  214.      10K!!!).

  217.      Same as version 1.43 except distributed via standard
  218.      shareware channels such as CompuServe.

  221.      This version is a maintenece release.  It fixes some
  222.      minor cosmetic problems.  This version will be
  223.      distributed with a book called Windows 3.1 Power Tools.

  225.      Version 1.41 September 26, 1993
  226.      This version is a maintenence release.  Verion 1.40 had
  227.      a major bug in the command line handling (it was
  228.      essentailly compeletely broken).  Version 1.42 also
  229.      removes the need for SHELL.DLL.

  231.      Version 1.40 November 1, 1991
  232.      After over a year and a half, there is finally a new
  233.      release of WinPrint!  This version is completely re-
  234.      vamped and updated for Windows 3.0 and 3.1.  New
  235.      features include multiple column printing, Windows
  236.      help, and drag drop from the Windows 3.1 file manager.

  241. LICENSE INFORMATION
  242.  
  243.      WinPrint is not and has never been public domain
  244.      software, nor is it free software.  WinPrint is a
  245.      commercial application distributed as shareware.
  246.  
  247.      Non-licensed users are granted a limited license
  248.      (registration) to use WinPrint on a 21-day trial basis
  249.      for the purpose of determining whether WinPrint is
  250.      suitable for their needs.  The use of WinPrint, except
  251.      for the initial 21-day trial, requires registration.
  252.      The use of unlicensed (un-registered) copies of
  253.      WinPrint by any person, business, corporation,
  254.      government agency or any other entity is strictly
  255.      prohibited.
  256.  
  257.      A single user license permits a user to use WinPrint
  258.      only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  259.      program on different computers, but may not use the
  260.      program on more than one computer at the same time.
  261.  
  262.      No one may modify or patch the WinPrint executable and
  263.      documentation files in any way, including but not
  264.      limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise
  265.      reverse engineering the program.
  266.  
  267.      A limited license is granted to copy and distribute
  268.      WinPrint only for the trial use of others, subject to
  269.      the above limitations, and also the following:
  270.  
  271.      1)   WinPrint must be copied in unmodified form,
  272.           complete with the file containing this license
  273.           information.
  274.  
  275.      2)   The WinPrint product consists of the following
  276.           files:
  277.           WINPRINT.EXE, TDUTIL.DLL, README.TXT, and
  278.           WINPRINT.HLP.  All of these files must be copied
  279.           in unmodified form.
  280.  
  281.      3)   WinPrint may not be distributed in conjunction
  282.           with any other product with out a specific license
  283.           to do so from Charles E. Kindel, Jr.
  284.  
  285.      4)   No fee, charge, or other compensation may be
  286.           requested or accepted, except as authorized below:
  287.  
  288.           A)   Operators of electronic bulletin board
  289.                systems (sysops) may make WinPrint available
  290.                for downloading only as long as the above
  291.                conditions are met.  An overall or time-
  292.                dependent charge for the use of the bulletin
  293.                board system is permitted as long as there is
  294.                not a specific charge for the download of
  295.                WinPrint.
  296.      
  297.           B)   Vendors may charge a disk duplication and
  298.                handling fee, which may not exceed eight
  299.                dollars.
  300.  
  301. LIMITED WARRANTY
  302.  
  303.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. guarantees your satisfaction
  304.      with this product for a period of 90 days from the date
  305.      of original purchase.  If you are unsatisfied with
  306.      WinPrint within that time period contact Charles E.
  307.      Kindel, Jr. via normal or electronic mail for a full
  308.      refund.
  309.  
  310.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. warrants that the program will
  311.      perform in substantial compliance with the
  312.      documentation supplied with the software product.  If a
  313.      significant defect in the product is found, the
  314.      Purchaser may obtain a refund.  In no event will such a
  315.      refund exceed the purchase price of the product.
  316.  
  317.      EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, CHARLES E. KINDEL, JR.
  318.      DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,
  319.      INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
  320.      MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE,
  321.      WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE
  322.      DEFECTIVE, THE PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE
  323.      ENTIRE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR
  324.      CORRECTION AND ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.

  331.      ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  333.      Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  334.      your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to
  335.      its contents.

  337. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  338.  
  339.      Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is
  340.      subject to restrictions as set forth in subdivision
  341.      (b)(3)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer
  342.      Software clause at 252.227-7013.
